At the same time as the US Ultra was happening in Seattle, a bunch of Skatefurther forum members in the Netherlands decided to give an Ultraskate a go. The results were pretty amazing.
Jesse Beau, 325km (331km counting the 2 laps his GPS failed)
Paul Brunninkhuis, 290km
Arjan Koek, 270km
Jochem Boer, 255km
Edwin aka Wizzy, 202km
Joost GT, 201km
From our reckoning 4 out of 6 skaters made it into the Ultraskater.com top 10. Jesse becoming the newest member of the coveted 200 mile club! From the pics it looks like a good time was had by all, I’m sure we will get a full write up on the 24 hours in the forum soon.
Run for Zimbabwe is a a project that combines the joy of riding with a good cause. A journey of 4 European guys longboarding a different country, every summer, to create awareness regarding the problems prevailing in Zimbabwe.
The riders this year (Sweden 2010): Alex (Germany), Alfred (Sweden), Peter (Sweden) and PA (Sweden).
The riders last year (Ireland 2009): Alex (Germany), Alfred (Sweden), Peter (Sweden) and Ralf (Germany).
In 2009 the guys from RFZ toured Ireland, from south to north, and raised 1.100,00 € for the “Albert Street Refugee School” Project at the Elias fund by selling shirts.
In 2010 the challenge is to cross Sweden from Kappelskär (East Coast) to Varberg (West Coast), a distance of approximately 700 km, in order to bring the spirit of “Run For Zimbabwe” to this Scandinavian country.
You can find out way more infor on the upcoming trip and on last years one across Ireland on their website, keep up to date with all the news on the Run for Zimbabwe Facebook page and watch a few videos on their vimeo page too.
The easy part is over! We now face the hardest climb yet, from sea level to summit of a 14,000ft mountain. Inch by inch, we skate into the mouth of the Andes and become drenched as we ascend into the rain-clouds. At high-altitude we battle tougher terrain with half the amount of oxygen. Sleeping for 15 hours in their tents, so as to outlive the rain and rest from the oxygen-deficient altitudes, proves to be costly and depletes our water and food supply, but we must push onward, striving to make it to the next town.
Can you feel the love? On Monday 7th June, 2010, Paul Kent married Rachael O’Neill, his long time lady and mother of his beautiful wee daughter in a ceremony conducted by a British ex-pat in Morocco. Aaron most likely was a bonny bridesmaid, and Adam…well, I’m sure you can imagine. What a fantastic way to end a trip that has captured the imaginations of thousands of skaters. You’re doing great things for distance skateboard journeying guys, now get home safe and rest up! Congratulations!
On July 10th, Al Collins will be embarking on a skate mission in aid of Muscular Distrophy Ireland, leaving from Ireland’s most southern point Mizen Head, and heading North to the top, Malin Head. The 750-800km journey hopes to be completed in just 10 days.
You can keep up with Al’s journey on his blog, you can donate on his mycharity page and learn more about MD on the Muscular Distrophy Ireland webpage. Shiner Distribution (Bristol, UK) have supplied him with cult wheels, sabre trucks and a Lush drop through deck.
This video explains it a bit more.
You can view the route Al is taking here, go join him for a couple of days if you are around! Hit up the forum thread too to keep an eye on his progress.
The SkatingSouth website has gone live. Great frineds and active forum members, Rob Hanson, Zoltan Nagy and Ben C Hall are heading on a skate trip south. On the 27th July they head off south from Trondheim in Norway to the ’stag party capital’ of Europe, Prague. 3000km later.
Norway - Sweden - Denmark - Germany - Czech Republic
All of us at skatefurther are so stoked for this, If it wasn’t for this site this trip would not have happened. All three skaters have distance in their blood, they don’t mind a few beers (essential on any distance trip I reckon!) and they are good mates. Its going to be amazing. Keep your eyes on their site, join the facebook page, and as ever check skatefurther.com for more info!
At the moment there are no planes in the air across Europe and all because of a volcano on Iceland called Eyjafjallajoekull. The ash from this volcano has grounded everything.
Why is this relevant on a website dedicated to long-distance skating? Well because today was supposed to be the day when a guy called Steve sets off to skate the ring road around Iceland! You can keep up to date with his skate (when it starts!) on his blog www.solepusher.blogspot.com
Steve sent us this shot of him waiting for the skies to clear - looking good mate!:
The first episode of the Long Treks on Skate Decks series produced by Paul Kent and Aaron Enevoldsen and edited by Adam Colton is up! Check out this amazing journey and get excited, because Long Treks Morocco is on the way!
