We here at Skatefurther truly believe skateboarding to be a viable form of transportation; be it skating down to the shops, to school, work or even across a country. GreenSkate is an event that started from a similar principal.

To Celebrate and encourage the low impact of longboard skateboards on our environment as a form of effective transportation.

On Earth Day 2007 Calgary Alberta Canada was the host to the first GreenSkate Event. It may come as a surprise that a community of longboarders surrounded by the Calgarian oil and gas industry would feel sympathetic to any green cause; however the Speedboard and Longboard Association of Calgary couldn’t be any more ambitious.

GreenSkate was expanded in 2008 to include the global skateboard community. Rocio Caceres Borlando from Chile in 2008 and 2009 continues to organize the largest GreenSkate with over 100 + riders that cruised 7.5 km to “La Moneda”. Everyone who skateboards in every city around the world is invited to participate in GreenSkate 2010.

Energy and environmental issues are on the global stage more than ever. Earth Day is a great time for longboarders to take to the streets to promote longboarding as a fast, environmentally friendly and sustainable form of urban transportation.

To find out more about the various GreenSkate events happening worldwide, hit up the GreenSkate.org Website, you can also show your love on their Facebook page.

We just got this through our inbox, and thought you might like to know of another UK journey that happened back in the summer. All on a topmount shortboard:

So Nat got hold of me through Gary@ ‘Bored of Southsea’ and asked for a little write up and a few pictures of my skate journey back in July. I don’t really know where to start. As you can imagine skating from Maidstone to Newquay is by no means a short skate! Well 328 miles to be exact, not including taking wrong turnings and going slightly off course!

Paul

A lot of people ask me why I did this and I blame ‘Comic Relief’ well I should really be thanking them for the most amazing trip of my life, it was this program that made me think of doing something (maybe stupid) but different for a good cause, for personal reasons I choose the Kent Air Ambulance Trust after the loss of a very dear friend who was killed coming back from the V-festival back in 2006 as well as this charity I chose Skateistan which is a Skateboard program based in Kabul in Afghanistan which promotes skateboarding to young kids to help escape from getting caught up in the war and doing something more constructive, as well as teaching them skateboarding they also help with their English and Computer Skills- keep up all the good work Oliver and all at Skateistan.

So back to the journey-there is so much that happened in the 10 days it took me to reach Newquay but all I can really say is if you ever get the opportunity to do such a thing take full advantage of it, grab it by the horns and ‘Push More’, it’s the most amazing thing I have ever done-maybe the hardest thing I have ever done but when it comes to personal achievement it’s right up there!

When asked about the training involved in such a trip people find it hard to believe that I didn’t really do any, I mean it involves myself skateboarding and I have been pushing myself around on a skateboard for over 20 years-surely that’s enough training isn’t it? Well you would think, didn’t quiet expect it to hurt as much as it did but there are a few things that made it a lot easier, ‘Party Feet’ those gel things that women use so they can wear stupid shoes to go out in, they saved my heels and the balls of my feet so much, ‘Ricta Clouds’ and ‘Zip Zipper’ wheels made the rough terrain bearable, ‘Bones Swiss Bearings’, yes they are 80 pound a set but they are money well spent and will last longer than opting for cheaper ones.

For more of an in depth diary of this skate journey check out the following blog: www.pushmoredriveless2009/blogspot.com, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those that made this possible for me, first of all I have to give a massive thanks to Ryan@ ‘POPNOW’, a Skater Owned Shop in Maidstone who hooked me up with a full set-up, spare bearings, shoes the lot! Cheers Ryan you’re a legend bro!

Just as much of a legend was Gary@ ‘Bored of Southsea’ who also hooked me up with some wheels and also a few T-shirt’s for the trip, also Paige@ ‘Eastpak’ who sent me some luggage sets for the trip, amazing and very useful! Cheers Paige. I mustn’t forget Scott@ ‘Skateistan’ who hooked me up with some ‘Skateistan’ T-shirt’s for the trip! Cheers Scott and keep up the good work mate!

Last and no means least I have to thank everyone for their support and encouragement both before and during the trip! There is one more person that I have to thank with all my heart who was there throughout the trip, even if not on the road with me was always there! My wife! Thank you! I love you Katy xx

Now that you have finished reading this go ‘Push More People!’

Mark Chavez

In August of 2010, 19 year old Mark Chavez will begin a year long, 6000 mile, longboard trip from Bremerton, Washington, south to Los Angeles, California on highway 101. Then east to Jacksonville, Florida along Interstate 10, and continuing north following Interstate 95 to Augusta, Maine.

Pushing For Peace will be a year long journey devoted to spreading love, peace, and compassion throughout the US from city to city. Inspired by the John Lennon quote that, If everyone demanded peace, instead of a new TV, then their would be peace, Mark is going to take a year long material fast. He will only purchase the things necessary for the trip; food, water, and shelter, when he cannot obtain those things through donations from his supporters. Although there isn’t an official web page set up at this time, there is a facebook page that can be found. On this page you can show your support, read more about the trip, and find out about the trip route, if you would like to help out along the way.

Bit late on this one I’m afraid, better late than never…

The King of the forest push race in Vancouver, Canada is really leading the way in distance races. Now in it’s 5th year, the 20km longboard endurance race offers a $1000 first place prize, a hefty amount for any kind of race.

The race itself is partnered with Metro Vancouver and the BC Brain Injury Association to promote and deliver a challenging and fun form of recreation for all rider skill levels and runs along the Seymour Valley Trailway in the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve.

Skatefurther forum member Paul ‘Fuzzydeer’ Kent claimed the King title again this year with a time of 38 minutes, whilst fellow Rayne rider Brianne Davies claimed the Queen. Paul’s Wife, Rachel got third in the womens.

Some members of the Skatefurther forum headed up to London to take part in the Mayor of London’s Skyride. They joined 65,000 cyclists taking over the streets and enjoyed a traffic free skate around the capital. Tim Peters took a load of pics and you can see them here. There is also a forum thread on the day. Skatefurther resident artist Ben (aka Len) was there to customise peoples boards

The skatefurther t-shirts got their first outing too.

Forum member Laura is honing her video editing skills…

In a meeting of downhill racers and distance pacers, a deserted business park near Plymouth saw forum members Laura, Matt, and JJ along with good friend Charlie and Rich get on down with their bad selves. This video is the result. Please excuse the quality - it was shot on Laura’s 5MP digital camera, and well, it was night time…enjoy! And hey, the new Skate Further banner even got its first night out on the town!
